The History of Drakontas

Drakontas was founded in 2004 by entrepreneurs and researchers affiliated with Drexel University, as part of a broader effort to commercialize research and development work conducted for the US Army CERDEC within the Advanced Communications and Information Networking (ACIN) program.  Researchers Moshe Kam and Wiliiam Regli, along with a team of more than two dozen senior academics and students, developed a wide range of wireless communications and information assurance tools as part of a broader initiative within the Department of Defense to explore the potential utility of mobile ad hoc wireless networking (MANET) in support of warfighter initiatives.  Co-Founders, Brian Regli (CEO) and James Sim (COO), brought together a multidisciplinary team of technologists, psychologists, software engineers, and public policy experts to craft a full evaluation of the developed technology and sought feedback from the law enforcement community regarding the most relevant capabilities for transition from the research and development program.

In 2005, Drakontas partnered with Drexel University's public safety department and the Public Safety Department of Atlantic County to develop DragonForce™, a situation awareness tool architected for deployments on MANETs and other wireless networks.  The software suite was designed for deployment on handheld communications devices, such as cell phones and commercial off the shelf PDAs, to provide GPS tracking of officers, text messaging, and access to other information resources required in tactical circumstances.  Over a two year period, the product was tested in iterative cycles with direct feedback from law enforcement, emergency responders and federal officials, and was launched successfully to support public safety operations at Drexel in 2006.

In 2007, the company leveraged its experience in the administration of research and development programs, and was awarded a cooperative agreement from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, National Institute of Justice to establish the NLECTC Communications Technologies Center of Excellence (COE).  The COE is administered as a not-for-profit program that provides technology assistance to law enforcement jurisdictions at the state and local level regarding specialized communications technologies.  This broader effort is complimented by ongoing Drakontas interaction with and support for federal program offices in the Department of Defense, Homeland Security and Commerce to amplify the return on taxpayer investment in the trial and evaluation of emerging communications tools.
